American, British embassies in Damascus closed
Syria-USA, Politics, 3/21/2003

The American and British embassies in Syria yesterday closed their doors until further signals following the beginning of the American and British war against Iraq.

An official statement issued by the American embassy in Damascus said that the armed conflict has started and the American embassy will close its doors until further signs at a time when the security condition will be assessed.

The statement explained that the working staff of the embassy are asked to stay at their homes and the American citizens to limit their movement, noting that it is not expected to put plans to evacuate the other American citizens and employees from Syria.

Meantime, the British embassy in Damascus closed its doors until Sunday, at least, according to a source at the embassy.

The British council both in Damascus and Aleppo closed their doors on March 7th.
