Morocco's reiterates call for liberation of Moroccan POWs held in Algeria
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 3/20/2003
Morocco's Human Rights minister, Mohamed Aujjar, on Wednesday called on the international community to intensify efforts for the liberation "without delay and conditions" of all Moroccan POWs, still detained in Tindouf camps, in south-western Algeria.
Taking the floor before the United Nations Human Rights commission convening here its 59th session, Aujjar expressed Morocco's "worries over the fate of 1,160 Moroccan detainees in Tindouf, including some who are sequestered for about a quarter of a century in inhumane conditions and utter violation of the international humanitarian law."
The Moroccan official paid tribute to the efforts deployed, in this respect, by the International Committee of the Red Cross and human rights NGOs to put an end to the plight of these prisoners.
Touching on the Sahara issue, he stressed that Morocco, which remains committed to the principles of international legality, will continue to cooperate "faithfully" with the United Nations, in order to find a settlement that guarantees the Kingdom's full sovereignty over all its territories.
