Mubarak holds the Iraqi leadership responsible for grave situation
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 3/20/2003

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak held the Iraqi leadership responsible for the grave situation it has already placed itself in and "all of us." He criticized the absence of any genuine Iraqi effort in dealing with the confidence crisis resulting from the aggression against Kuwait.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mubarak expressed his hope that "the Iraqi government will now realize that the position it has put itself in, also put all of us in it."

Mubarak added it is regrettable that "we have reached this grave stage as a result of mistakes made by several sides, the first the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, noting that this invasion created security fears in many countries of the region that opened the world wide for the intensive foreign presence."

The Egyptian President continued that Iraq was able to use the past 12 years to restore back confidence with its neighbors of the Arab states and other sides of the international community and to eliminate its fears. He also criticized the absence of any Iraqi efforts to dealing with the confidence crisis resulted from this aggression ( its invasion of Kuwait ) and its implications.

President Mubarak said "we have intensified our contacts with the Iraqi leadership to convince it to respond to the relentless international efforts to settle this case by peaceful means and we called for the Sharm esh Sheikh summit which stressed total rejection for attacking Iraq or a threat to the security and safety of any Arab country."

The Egyptian President concluded saying " we have all in Egypt, government and people a great responsibility to protect our internal front and strengthen our March towards achieving our national goals. We will work together in order to maintain our national security in being the main foundation for our Arab and regional role."
