Arab FMs meet to discuss the situation in Iraq
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 3/19/2003

The secretary general of the Arab League Amr Mousa announced on Tuesday that the Arab foreign ministers will hold a special meeting on March 23rd in order to discuss the Iraqi crisis. He indicated the possibility of convening this meeting before this date.

Moussa told journalists in Cairo that the ministers will hold "special session to discuss the development of conditions in Iraq" at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo prior to the AL council ordinary session on March 24 and 25.

Moussa added that he had made contacts with most of the Arab foreign ministers, expressing his conviction that "the next meeting of the AL council is very important." He explained that the AL is currently preparing a collection of recommendations and draft resolutions to be taken by the foreign ministers, especially regarding the situation, if military operations will be taking place in the region, concerning humanitarian aspects.

He added he intended to go to Baghdad to make talks with the Iraqi officials, noting that after recent developments "I found it better to stay in Cairo and meet with several ministers."

Moussa called for reconsidering the decision of withdrawing the UN inspectors from Iraq, stressing that need of ruling out military action because war will be conducive to partitioning (Iraq). He added "we demand continued political work and the UN security council to shoulder its responsibilities."
