Syria: US actions in violations of UN resolutions and charter
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 3/19/2003

Syrian official spokesman announced the following: Syria sees that Bush's ultimatum to strike Iraq contradicts United Nation's resolutions, charter, principles, and purposes, adding that any military act against Iraq contradicts the international unanimity that emerged at Security Council's recent meetings, which doesn't give anyone a cart blanche for war.

Syria sees that any military act against Iraq is considered a justification for aggression and for an intervention in the internal affairs of the United Nation's members.

Aiming at averting Iraq and the region the dangers of war, and to preserve the principles and purposes of the UN's charter, Syria has exerted every possible effort through the intensive phone calls that President Bashar al-Assad made with many world leaders, and through the Summits of Sharm al-Sheikh, nonalignment, and Islamic Conference's Committee. In addition to the Syrian stance and exerted efforts inside and outside the Security Council.

Until now, Syria still believes in the possibility of reaching a peaceful solution to the question of mass destruction weapons' disarmament in Iraq through the implementation of UN's resolution No. 1441, and through giving UN's inspectors enough time, especially after the progress they achieved due to the active cooperation of Iraq, which is stated by UN Chief Inspector Hans Blix at the Security Council yesterday.
