Egypt finds Saad Ibrahim as not guilty
Egypt, Politics, 3/19/2003

The court of cassation on Tuesday morning acquitted human rights activist Saduddin Ibrahim, the director of the Ibn Khaldoun Centre for research and human studies. The court ordered that Ibrahim be cleared of all charges.

In statements he gave to reporters after receiving the verdict, Dr. Saduddin Ibrahim expressed his absolute confidence in the fairness of the Egyptian justice system and denied any foreign interference in the course of his trial.

He said he plans to travel abroad for treatment before returning home to his beloved country where he intends to spend the rest of his life.

In its verdicts in the controversial Ibn Khaldoun case, the court also acquitted Nadia Abdel Nour, a Sudanese national and an employee of Ibn Khaldoun Centre and Mohamed Hassanein Emara, a policeman.

It sentenced Magda al-Beih, a civil servant at Menouf city council to six months in prison with a stay of execution.

The court of cassation sentence reversed two higher state security court rulings convicting Ibrahim and his companions with sedition, spreading rumors that harm the country's interests and receiving donations from abroad.

Had it not been for yesterday verdict Ibrahim would have been sent to seven years behind bars.
