Al-Watan: Saddam Hussein's new peace initiative
Iraq-USA, Politics, 3/18/2003

In its yesterday's issue the Saudi daily al-Watan said that the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein sent a new peace proposal to the administration of the US President George Bush giving five concessions to end the state of confrontation between the two countries, but the US administration rejected this proposal.

The paper quoted American and European diplomatic sources as saying that among these concessions are the readiness of the Iraqi President to quit the authority in favor of his son Qusai and to leave Iraq later but not now, as well as his readiness to make important changes in the structure of the Iraqi regime and its political attitudes after the end of the internal war.

The same sources described the initiative of the Iraqi president as the last peace proposal sent to Washington before the eruption of war and explained that more than an Arab and international figures who have good relations with each of Baghdad and Washington assumed the mission of conveying these proposals to the American officials.

The sources stressed that the American officials who received this Iraqi offer informed the sides concerned that the administration of President Bush rejects it categorically because it leads to keeping Saddam Hussein in the authority through his son Qusai and because the US administration is not intended to make symbolic changes in the Iraqi regime, rather wants a fundamental change in the structure of the ruling system in Iraq, as a whole in a way to topple all members of this regime and its officials.
