Al-Assad concludes a short visit to Iran

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad held talks yesterday with Iranian President Muhammad Khatami in Tehran in which both demanded a peaceful solution to the looming issue in Iraq.
Earlier, at noon, al-Assad arrived in Tehran for a short visit to Islamic Republic of Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi with an accompanying delegation received al-Assad at International Muhre Abad's Airport.
The official delegation accompanying al-Assad included Vice President Abdulhalim Khaddam, Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, attended the meeting.
Talks between the two presidents dealt with the latest events in the region, especially the Iraqi issue and the Israeli continued aggressive practices in occupied Palestinian territories.
They reviewed the current regional and international conditions and the vast international opposition to a possible U.S led war against Iraq in the light of tense atmospheres passing this region.
The views were identical about the necessity of boosting the regional and international efforts to reach a peaceful solution for the Iraqi issue.
The two sides stressed the necessity for giving the UN inspectors the sufficient time to fulfill their mission according to U.N Resolution Number 1441.
The two presidents then called for the necessity of answering the international calls, all over the world, to prevent war.
Concerning the situation in occupied Palestinian lands, the two sides condemned the Israeli practices against the Palestinian people. They stressed the necessity for gaining back the Palestinian rights and the Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab lands according to the UN resolutions.
Al-Assad then paid a visit to the Islamic Iranian Revolutionary Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He was accompanied by Iranian President Khatami and the Syrian and Iranian accompanying delegations.
