The US has not made its case against Iraq
Iraq-USA, Analysis, 3/15/2003

Sunday 3/16/2003:
The US vice president asserted that "We know (Iraqi President Saddam Hussein) has been absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons, and we believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons,'' Cheney told NBC's "Meet the Press.'' the New York Times reported Sunday, with Cheney adding "I think Mr. ElBaradei, frankly, is wrong." and cast doubt on the accuracy of the International Atomic Energy Agency report on Iraq.

The US by this statement confirms that:
1. The US does not know if Iraq has a nuclear program, and the US is merely speculating that Iraq is "devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons." Many countries are "devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons." This statement in effect proves nothing. It is like saying "some people are devoted to becoming millionaire, saints or criminals." To be devoted to something is not a crime nor does it make it a reality. There are people devoted to worshiping the devil in the USA, and this is not a crime, nor is it illegal, distasteful as it may be to some.

2. The US said "I think Mr. ElBaradei, frankly, is wrong." What the US is saying is that the US is not really sure if ElBaradei is wrong. This is understandable. The US has no evidence of its own to present to the world that Iraq has nuclear weapons. The evidence it did present to the world at the United Nations was a forgery, as UN weapons inspectors found out, and the CIA reportedly knew.

3. The US is further undermining the credibility of a UN weapons inspection institution, at the very same time the US is calling for the UN to disarm Iraq. If the UN itself is saying Iraq has no nuclear weapons or capabilities, then how can the UN be expected by the US to disarm Iraq from such weapons or capabilities? The US arguments has no logic in it.

4. The US needs to present real, and specific evidence and not forged evidence to the world on what is the Iraqi nuclear threat, and to provide the evidence to the UN weapons inspectors for them to do their job. The evidence the US has presented was forgery. That is a very poor practice to sway domestic and international opinion. Also, the US in effect tried to bribe several countries, and tried to bypass and damage the internal democratic institutions and processes of several countries, and is trying to do the same for international institutions.

It is a very sad thing to watch the damage the US administration is doing in its pursuit of its interests -- with such an unconstrained and unbridled power and practice. That the US should be very strongly opposed and restraint on this issue is an absolute necessity -- an issue that the world must not be coerced into compromising on. What is equally urgent is the need to stop the bleeding the US is doing to democratic values where decisions should be made based on evidence, debate, consensus, and due process.

It is said by trial lawyers that: if you have the law on your side, you argue the law, and if you have the facts on your side, you argue the facts. The US seems incapable to make a case for either the law or the facts. To act under such circumstance, and without consensus, is very injurious to democratic values.
