U.S ambassador to Morocco nominated to run U.S. public diplomacy office
Regional-USA, Politics, 3/15/2003

The United States Ambassador to Rabat, Margaret Tutwiler, was nominated by US President George Bush to run the state department's public diplomacy office to improve the nation's image, sources close to the Department Of State said on Thursday.

Tutwiler, who served under George Bush senior's administration as spokesperson for the Department Of State and a close collaborator of the American former secretary of state, James Baker, was chosen because of her long experience in communication, the source explains.

A central mission of the newly created American department for foreign affairs is to promote the U.S global image.

Tutwiler will replace a former specialist in the publicity sector, Charlotte Beers, who resigned last month, for health reasons, one year after her nomination at the top job.

"Tutwiler is super competent. The Secretary of State knows and respects her," an aide to Secretary of State, Colin Powell, was reported as saying.
