Moroccan imprisoned servicemen to receive European parliament's passport for freedom

A Moroccan servicemen, imprisoned since 1976 in the Polisario's detention camps of Tindouf (southwestern Algeria), will be awarded the European Parliament's "Passport for freedom," the initiative coordinator, Dominique Rambaud, announced on Friday.

The "passport for freedom" will be awarded to the Moroccan soldier, Mimouni Zeggai, in his capacity as the world's oldest prisoner of war. He has been held for over 25 years in the Tindouf camps, in total violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention that governs the treatment of prisoners of war, said a statement of the European MP.

The original and innovative initiative was set up in 2000 by member of the Parliament Alain Madelin who was joined by other representatives of diverse political trends.

The document is awarded to persons fighting for human rights and whose security and freedom are threatened.

The MPS who sign the passport pledge to do their utmost to guarantee to its holder expression freedom, the right of movement and a safe life.
