Palestine, Politics, 3/15/2003

In a statement, the People's Front For the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said that its secretary general Ahmad Saadat detained in Areiha prison started a food strike over what he has been exposed to of "strong measures" by the British and American guards.

The Front's leadership official in diaspora, Maher al-Taher, said that the "Anglo- American guards prevented visits for Saadat and his friends, prevented them from getting out of their room and cut contacts between them and their relative out of the prison."

Al-Taher recalled that the Palestinian supreme court issued a sentence for releasing Saadat.

He held the Palestinian Authority responsible for "what damage might be inflected on Saadat and called on all human rights defending forces to speak high for his release."
