UN inspector killed in a car crash in Iraq
Iraq, Local, 3/14/2003

An Iraqi source said that one UN inspector was killed and another was wounded on Thursday after a truck collided with their car as they were returning back from an inspection mission.

One member of the Iraqi audition commission in charge of relations with the UN inspectors said that the victim whom he did not mention by name, was coming back from al-Nu'maneyah to the south of the capital Baghdad, together with a colleague when the accident took place.

He added that the car which was carrying the two inspectors, whose nationality was not disclosed, was hit by a truck on a high way to the south of Baghdad.

The Iraqi source indicated that one of the inspectors was strongly wounded and was admitted to al-Rasheed military hospital where he died one hour from his arrival while the other inspector is still in hospital and his condition is "stable."

This is, however, the first incident of its kind to take place with the UN inspectors since their arrival in Iraq in November 2002.
