Five Palestinians, two Israelis killed in West Bank confrontations
Palestine-Israel, Military, 3/14/2003
Five Palestinians were killed by bullets of the Israeli forces in a town situated between Nablus and Jenin to the North of the West Bank.
Palestinian security sources and Israeli military sources said that the five Palestinians were killed on Thursday during fire exchange with the Israeli forces following the invasion of Tammoun town, 20 Km to the south of Jenin.
The Israeli soldiers banned anyone from approaching the bodies of the Palestinians to check their identity and whether they were armed. Palestinian sources said that the clashes took place after the Israeli forces cordoned the town's municipality and a school.
In another development, two Israelis were strongly wounded in Jerusalem after an unidentified person opened fire at a car they were riding in one of Jerusalem's quarters. The Israeli police said it suspects that the attackers are most likely from the Palestinian resistance.
Earlier in the day, two Israelis were killed near Hebron city to the south of the West Bank and reports indicated they were killed as fire was opened wrongly by the Israeli soldiers against them. The two killed Israelis were inside their car. Eye witnesses said that the fire was opened by persons wearing the Israeli army uniform.
The Israeli radio said the incident was a mistake and that the Israeli forces are making investigation into whether the bullets were from soldiers on the ground or from a helicopter.
On the other hand, the Israeli forces bombarded the houses of two Palestinians active in the Islamic Jihad movement in Sidon to the North of the West Bank and the Israeli forces claimed that the two activists were involved in killing one Israeli soldier in the town situated near Toulkarem city.
