Sudan denies plane downing; battle against rebels in Darfur ends
Sudan, Politics, 3/12/2003

The Sudanese government has denied news talking about the downing of an army helicopter for the Sudanese army in Darfur district at the hands of the new rebel group or what is called "Darfur Liberation Front" which leads the opposition against Sudan from outside the country.

A prominent security figure said that the Sudanese army was able to eject the rebels from all of their positions in Murra mountain and that the fighting were settled and things returned back to normalcy in Darfur province.

The Sudanese information minister accused some opposition forces and Nashaweya tribes of providing the rebels with weapons.

The Sudanese official spokesman for the governor of Southern Darfur province, Adam Hamid Mousa, said that the said plane was experienced technical problems while carrying a security team to enforce security and was not attacked by the rebels. He stressed that the technical damage was fixed on Thursday and that the crew of the planes and its passengers were not effected.

On the other hand, the Sudanese minister of information al-Zahawi Malik said that the remains of the Chad's opposition are supplying the rebels with weapons, stressing that the flow of weapons from Chad since a long time resulted in having these weapons now in the hands of the rebels. He also stressed that these weapons were used earlier in confrontation among tribes in Darfur.
