Syrian National Socialist wins three seats at parliament, factional disputes
Syria, Politics, 3/12/2003

The Syrian National Socialist party has achieved gain for a party which is still outside the National Progressive Front in Syria, by joining the Syrian parliament with three Parliamentarians after the party's leadership has not recognized Basil Dahdouh as a representative for another faction of the party.

The success of the Syrian National Socialist party came after including two of its members to the list of the Syrian National Progressive front and the success of a third member in one independent seat for Damascus city.

Though the Baath party was the side which proposed for the National Socialist party for nomination for the two seats, however, it intends not to apply for joining the National Progressive Front before making amendments on its charter and issuing a party law.

The chairman of the political bureau of the Syrian National Socialist party Issam al-Maheyri said on his party's joining of the Syrian front that "joining is just a contract between two sides and it is still under discussion and consideration, considering that the relations between the Baath Party and the National Socialist party as 'an alliance.'" As for parliament member Basil Dahdouh, the candidate for the democratic trend in the party, as he claimed, Maheyri accused him of violating the regulations of the Progressive National party and this resulted in expelling him, considering that there are no factions for the Syrian National Socialist Party.
