Sudan-Chad, Politics, 3/11/2003
The Sudanese information minister al-Zahawi Ibrahim yesterday accused what he called "remains of the opposition and Chad's tribes of providing weapons to the rebels of Darfour" who control Murra mountain area to the west of Sudan.
On the sideline of his participation in the 6th meeting of the information ministers of the member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference OIC, the minister said the "remains of the Chad's opposition supply the rebels with weapons." He added that the "flow of weapons from Chad since some time resulted in having now these weapons in the hand of the rebels." He explained that the weapons were used earlier in clashes between the tribes in Darfour.
Just by the end of February, the Sudanese mass media announced that a group of 300 armed men controlled Jolo city, the administrative headquarters of Murra mount area, situated in the Northern Darfour province.
The authorities said that the group held a training camp in Murra town in order to launch attacks against the police and the army. Darfour liberation front announced on Sunday it had downed a helicopter that was carrying an official in the province.
Darfour is considered one of the remote and partially deserted areas. Since years, it has been a theatre for tribal confrontations and attacks launched by armed gangs, but without the emergence of any armed political movement.
Since 1983, Sudan has been suffering from war that resulted in killing 1.5 million persons between the government forces to the north of the country and the rebel movement in the south.
