Sudan urges Arab states to hurry in rebuilding the south
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 3/10/2003
The Sudanese government has warned the Arab states and its voluntary organizations against linking contributions to rebuilding the south to achieving peace, and urged them to hurry in financing developmental projects so as to reach a voluntary unity between the northern and southern parts of the country.
The chairman of the council for coordinating southern states Rayak Qai said upon addressing the non- governmental Arab organizations conference which started its deliberations in Khartoum with the participation of 50 Arab voluntary organizations that the absence of the Arab role in the question of southern Sudan resulted in the control of western organizations which he had described as having "hidden agendas."
He added that linking humanitarian aids to found strategic developmental projects to achieving peace, as did western organizations will lead to a large gap between the north and south of Sudan.
He called on the Arab League to intensify its political and social role to eliminate the consequences of war which the people of south and north of Sudan, suffered, alike.
For her part, the AL special envoy for peace in Sudan, Nadia Makram, the sponsor of the conference, stressed that the objective of convening this conference is to draw a map for large and small projects in southern Sudan in order to initiate them by the Arab funds and non governmental Arab voluntary organizations.
She said to the conference, that the south is in need of all social services and to establish the infrastructure so that the option of unity will be attractive.
