Arab summit committee heads for the UN concerning Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 3/7/2003
An official at the Arab League (AL) announced yesterday that members of the committee stemmed from the recent Arab summit headed to New York to meet with the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
This move falls in the course of efforts by the Arab states against war which the US threatens to launch against Iraq. The committee includes the foreign ministers of Egypt, Syria, Bahrain, Tunisia, and Lebanon and the secretary general of the Arab League AL Amr Moussa.
The committee will also meet with members of the head of UN weapons inspection committee Hans Blix and the director general of the International Agency for Atomic Energy Mohamed ElBaradei and permanent members at the UN Security Council.
The committee is due to take part today in a session for the UN Security Council, as Blix and ElBaradei will give their reports concerning the inspection operation. This session will be attended by most of the foreign ministers of the UN Security Council permanent member states due to its importance concerning developments in Iraq.
To this end, the Arab leaders in their recent summit in Sharm esh Sheikh last Saturday announced "total rejection to attacking Iraq." They commended Iraq's cooperation with the UN inspectors and called for giving the UN inspection team enough time to complete their work.
