Morocco, Italy sign telecom understanding

Morocco and Italy signed in Rome Tuesday a memorandum of understanding in telecommunication, to foster cooperation in areas of internet, e-government, e-commerce, e-education and bank-related information
The MOU also covers enhancing information trading on information and communication regulation policies, and application of new technologies in postal services.
The memorandum, signed by Moroccan minister of industry, trade and telecommunications, Rachid Talbi El Alami and Italian telecom minister, Maurizio Gaspari, includes areas such as electronic fiscal management, remote medicine, the audiovisual sector, as well as training and cooperation in the framework of international institutions such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
In terms of the agreement, Morocco and Italy agreed to set up a follow up committee that will set up a program for specific cooperation actions in the field, while making the e-Morocco strategy, a national ambition of the kingdom, a priority.
The strategy covers enhancing main online administration, e-commerce, electronic education and research and generalizing information and communication technologies.
Talbi El Alami, who started Monday a three-day visit to Italy, met members of the Italian government, the head of the Italian employers' association for relations with Africa and the Middle East, and several executives.
According to the Italian statistics institute, Italy is Morocco's 4th trade partner. The kingdom accounts for 6% of Italy's foreign trade.
Italy's imports from Morocco, (mainly canned fish, chemical and oil products) reached 291 million Euro in June 2002, while its exports to the kingdom, mainly fabric and machines, were worth 421 million Euro in the same period.
Italy's direct investments in Morocco represent 1.6% of the overall foreign direct investments in the North-African nation.
