OIC summit today in Doha, an attempt to join anti- war forces
Regional-Qatar, Politics, 3/5/2003

The special summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) starts today in Doha, Qatar, as the member states at the OIC will try to join voice to other voices to stand against any American war against Iraq.

The OIC summit is being held in Qatar, which currently presides over the OIC and simultaneously hosts American forces in the region. The summit is being held with remarkable absence of basic members in the organization like Saudi Arabia, whose relations with Doha are cool due to bilateral problems.

Saudi Arabia will be represented by a delegation to be headed by the deputy foreign minister Nizar Madani, while the Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi will preside over his country's delegation in a large delegation including 120 members.

The Jordanian delegation will be headed by the prime minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb under Amman's disappointment over the death penalty sentence taken by Qatar against a Jordanian journalist working in Qatar on charge of spying.

The chairman of the Palestinian authority Yasser Arafat will talks to the summit in a recorded video tape speech.

Iraq which seeks to get the utmost support from the summit in confrontation of the USA, is headed by the chairman of the revolutionary leadership council Izzat Ibrahim on top of a large delegation including 90 members, and by that the Iraqi delegation is one of the largest participating delegation following the Iranian delegation.

The foreign ministers of the OIC participating states or their representatives held on Tuesday evening an unofficial meeting "for consultation" supposed to have concluded a position similar to that recently issues by the Non-Aligned Movement conference in Malaysia and of the Sharm Esh Sheikh Arab summit in Egypt, rejecting war and demands Baghdad to abide by UN resolutions concerning dismantling of weapons.
