Sudanese peace negotiations resume, 25 persons killed by rebels
Sudan, Politics, 3/4/2003

The Sudanese government's delegation for peace negotiations with the rebels arrived yesterday in Nairobi where the two sides will start today a new round outside the main negotiation main-lines concerning neglected areas outside the historical borders of southern Sudan.

Meantime, the presidential peace consulate has concluded three consultation meetings with people from the Blue Nile, al-Nouba mountains and An Bai, that ended with supporting the citizens of these area described as "neglected" by the government proposals and authorizing the advisor of the Sudanese President for peace affairs Ghazi Salah eddine to talk on behalf of their area in the negotiations.

Unprecedented negotiations will start today in Nairobi between the Sudanese government and the rebels on the "neglected areas." The government delegation is led by the foreign ministry secretary Mutarraf Saddiq while the delegation of the rebels is led by Neyal Dinq Nayal.

Representatives for the sol-called "neglected areas" share the government's negotiation delegation and the consultation delegation which includes representatives for various political and social forces.

On the other hand, the Sudanese government offered the rebels' militias which are positioned in Dar Four a ten- day period time for peaceful negotiations and to end the crisis. But the rebels responded by launching attacks using heavy weapons that resulted in killing, wounding 25 persons.

In apparent disregard to the government's efforts to dismantle the crisis by sending negotiation teams and intensifying arrangements to end the rebel act which emerged recently in Dar Four, peacefully, the armed militias attacked Artala area which separates between the two estates of Southern Dar Four and West Dar Four and this resulted in killing 12 persons and wounding 13 as a result of the militias attack against the area with a force of 200 persons, using heavy weapons. People of the area confronted the attack of the rebels in a fight which lasted for more than 10 hours last Wednesday.
