Syria to develop high quality olive production strategy

A team of consultants is currently visiting the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Syria on a formulation mission regarding olive and olive oil production starting from March 28th, 2003 and lasting for about a month.

During this mission, the team, which consists of international and national expert consultants and technical advisors, will work in cooperation with several parties in Syria in order to achieve the target objectives. The work of the consultants has the following objectives. First of all, a field assessment to be carried out in relation to the current status of the olive crop sector in Syria, especially in terms of processing plants and their adequacy to the processing requirements. After evaluation, a report is to be prepared along with compiling background information regarding the constraints and opportunities of the olive sector with the aim of developing export opportunities by ensuring high quality standards in line with the international norms and criteria.

Such report is to contain an assessment of the laboratory infrastructure and human resources in relation to olive quality control and certification procedures. The formulation mission also aims at making and reviewing proposals for the encouragement of "small" olive oil processing production and processing, and for expanding and intensifying the introduction of Integrated Pest Management program already initiated for adequate pest control leading to improve olive and olive oil quality. This is in addition to discussing with the government authorities and representatives of potential donors in the country, the logical framework of a follow-up project as well as estimated budget requirements both from the national and donor contributions.

This formulation mission will help in achieving a strategy describing the different components of an integrated strategy for improved olive production and processing, including quality standards, control and certification procedures in accordance to the international standards. It will also help in producing a project document for the implementation of an integrated strategy for "High quality olive production and processing in Syria," in accordance with the format required for donor assistance.
