Gulf final statement supports UAE initiative to solve the Iraqi issue
Gulf-United Arab Emirates, Politics, 3/4/2003
The Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) announced in conclusion of its meeting in Doha yesterday its support for the UAE initiative to solve the Iraqi issue and stressed the need for supporting this initiative into the Arab context for discussion and assessment.
The meeting's final statement said that due to the fact that no opportunity was given to this important initiative to be discussed at the Arab summit conference in Sharm esh Sheikh, the GCC sees the need to debate it into the Arab context in order raise support for it in dealing with an Arab issue and aims at warding off the evil from the Iraqi people and averting them the consequences of a likely American war.
Worthy mentioning that the initiative proposed by President of the United Arab Emirates UAE calls on the Iraqi leadership to step down and to placing Iraq under the mandate of the UN and the Arab League.
Once again, Qatar's foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Jaber al-Thani stressed in the final press conference of the meeting that the UAE initiative is important, clear and worthy to be studied and that the Gulf states will propose it again to the Arab states.
Hamad said that the initiative asks the Iraqi leadership to make the decision itself, and therefore this proposal does not interfere in the internal affairs of Iraq.
