Abductors of Moroccan-born US citizen get three-year jail term
Morocco-USA, Local, 3/1/2003

The court of appeal of Rabat sentenced three women to three years in jail on grounds of involvement in the kidnapping of a US citizen, of Moroccan descent.

The three women were found guilty of participation in the kidnapping and sequestration of the young American during eight days. They were also fined 30,000 dirhams, US$3000.

The crime dates back to July 2001, when the three women started frequenting the workplace of the victim, a cyber-cafe in Sale (near Rabat) with the aim to abduct him, instigated by the brother of his ex-wife for a ransom worth 30,000 dirhams.

According to the women's testimony, one of them was able bring the victim into an "affair." She asked him one day to drive her and her sisters to the Sale rail-station. Once there, the women disappeared, leaving the victim to four male accomplices who took hold of him and drove him onboard another car to an unknown destination.

The kidnappers ransomed the victim's family living in the US. The money was handed to another brother of the victim's ex, a student in the US. The ravishers asked for another sum of money before freeing their hostage.

The three women were found guilty of constituting a criminal band, kidnapping and sequestration. Their accomplices are still on the run.
