Hopes for stronger Russian contribution to Sahara issue settlement

Speaker of the Morocco House of Representatives (parliament lower chamber), Abdelouahed Radi, voiced hope that Russia contributes "more to the United Nations efforts to close the artificial issue of the Moroccan Sahara once and for all."
Speaking at a meeting in Rabat with speaker of the Douma, Seleznev Guennady Nikolayevech, currently on a three-day visit to Morocco, Radi recalled the origin of the "fabricated" issue, and Morocco's collaboration with the United Nations and the personal envoy of UN secretary general for the Sahara, James Baker, in order to settle the issue within Morocco's territorial integrity.
Nikolayevech voiced support to Morocco's position in favor of the settlement of the issue in the framework of the UN, through political and peaceful means.
Radi voiced Morocco's will to foster ties with Russia, a "friendly country which contributes to enriching and developing human civilization," adding that Russia is able to recover its economic and strategic power.
The Moroccan speaker stressed the importance of the declaration of strategic partnership signed between the two countries on the occasion of the royal visit, noted that the House of Representatives all the steps, either made or under way, to consolidate bilateral relations, to serve common interests and world peace.
Guennady Nikolayevech underlined the importance of applying the declaration, and voiced the support the Douma grants it.
The two countries are bound by several cooperation agreements in fields of air and sea transport, investment promotion and protection and cultural and scientific exchanges.
Guennady Nikolayevech voiced satisfaction over the fishing license to operate in Moroccan waters, granted to Russian fishermen, saying that "this will facilitate the set up of a fruit-bearing partnership between the two countries."
"Bilateral relations offer great opportunities of economic cooperation and trade, whose amount is currently estimated at 380 million dollars a year," Nikolayevech said.
