WFP warns against the nutritional situation in Mauritania
Mauritania, Health, 2/28/2003

A mission belongs to the World Food Program organization has warned against the dangers of the food situation in Mauritania because of the wave of drought on the country and called for announcing utmost state of alert in order to deal with this situation.

The mission inspected several agricultural areas which have been affected by the drought in Mauritania.

The chairman of the mission Ibrahim Bukar Dagha explained that the situation in these areas require an urgent action by the international community.

In press statements, Dagha hailed the efforts made by the Mauritania's government, and simultaneously denounced "the reduction in the aid provided for development and the decrease of aid sources. A matter which creates a grave situation for humanity as a whole."

However, the World Food Program is planning to provide urgent aid for Mauritania estimated at 44,000 tons of foodstuffs. The program, moreover, handed over the government of Mauritania 5300 tons of cereals to meet urgent needs.

On January 28, the organization called on the international community to provide aid to 580,000 threatened of hunger in five African countries including Mauritania. The call estimated the aids at 28 million dollars; 80% of which are allotted for Mauritania, the most vulnerable.

The regional spokesman for the WFP announced on February 21 that only 10% of the needs aids are met.
