Salah Eddine meeting learns about the American plans from Zalmai
Iraq-USA, Politics, 2/27/2003

The Iraqi opposition figures yesterday in Salah Eddine, near Irbil, directly learned what it did not want to hear from the Americans on that there will be an American military ruler to Baghdad and that the new ruler will cooperate after the presumed collapse of Saddam Hussein, with members of the ruling Baath Party.

However, the deliberations of the meeting concentrated on forming a tripartite unified and provisional leadership and to define the "after- Saddam" strategy at a time when doubts prevail over the US intention after a toppling the Iraqi regime, especially after the US declaration that it intends to install an American military ruler in Baghdad. The meeting which lasts for two days will discuss the formation of several branch committees like foreign relations, the press, human rights and emergency affairs. Some 58 figures -- members of the follow up and co-ordination committee which is composed of 65 persons attended the meeting.

The American envoy Zalmai Zada arrived to the city of Irbil from the Turkish territories via al-Khabour border center, where more than 270 journalists were gathered, banned by the Turkish authorities from entering Iraq's Kurdistan to cover works of the opposition conference in Salah Eddine, neighboring Irbil city.

A Kurdish source said that the Kurdish forces discovered several attempts to damage the work of the conference during the two last weeks, noting that the American planes "intensified their sorties over Kurdistan's airspace during the two past days, coincided with convening the meeting."
