Syria-Regional, Politics, 2/26/2003
It seemed yesterday that the road has become paved before the convening of the Arab summit in Sharm Esh Sheikh next Saturday. After Iraq's approval to attend and give up its request to postpone the summit for two weeks, and assertions made by the Arab League that the summit will concentrate on the resolutions of the Beirut's summit concerning the "case between Kuwait and Iraq," Syria has announced its determination to take part, as well as Lebanon, the summit's current President.
However the Arab League chief Amr Moussa said yesterday that Iraq who had asked for the postponement of the summit until after March 14, has stressed in an official memorandum to the AL general secretariat its participation in the Arab Summit on March 1st in Sharm Esh Sheikh, Egypt. Moussa expressed his appreciation for the "Iraqi decision," stressing the "importance of inter- Arab solidarity" in this crucial phase.
Moussa said that this summit aims at avoiding "which will be of catastrophic consequences against the region.
Earlier, Moussa had stressed that convening the summit on March 1st will not constitute an embarrassment for Iraq, noting that the decision to convene the summit was decided after getting the consent of the majority at the AL.
