Al-Shara: US to use a new UN resolution on Iraq as pretext for attack
Syria-USA, Politics, 2/24/2003
Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara received yesterday a phone call from US Secretary of States Colin Powell.
The conversation dealt with the Iraqi question and its developments in the light of the latest report of the international inspectors and the UN Security Council session which was held in New York in the 14th of the current month.
Powell underlined the American stance which doubts Iraq's cooperation with the international inspectors expressing that America is becoming impatient towards Iraqi hesitation for disarming itself of mass destruction weapons.
Powell added that his country will propose a second resolution to the UN Security Council.
For his part Al-Shara stressed that all peaceful means of the 1441 resolution have not been exhausted, especially that the international inspectors continue their job without any noteworthy difficulties, and that disarming Iraq of weapons could be achieved peacefully.
Al-Shara stressed that the Arabs and the International Community express officially and publicly their rejection to the war and call the American administration to solve the Iraqi crisis peacefully since the 1441 resolution has not determined any specific timetable to the work of the international inspectors.
Al-Shara also asserted that Syria doesn't see any justification for issuing a second UN Security Council resolution and believes that such a resolution however moderate would give the impression that resolution 1441 has expired and would be exploited by war advocates in and outside the United States as a pretext for a military act against Iraq.
Al-Shara also received yesterday a phone call from his Spanish counterpart Mrs. Anna Palacio.
The conversation dealt with the latest developments regarding the Iraqi question.
Al-Shara stressed the necessity for solving the Iraqi crisis peacefully through giving enough time to the inspectors to continue their work according to the UN Security Council 1441 resolution. Al-Shara stressed the importance of the bilateral cooperation between Syria and Spain in all domains.
