Morocco paid $ 80 mln in compensation to disappearance victims (official)
Morocco, Politics, 2/22/2003
Morocco has paid, until end of January 2003, more than $ 80 million dollars to compensate 3700 victims of disappearances and arbitrary detention.
The statement was made by Abdelaziz Benzakour, member of the Human Rights Advisory Council (CCDH) at the International Conference on Missing People, currently held in Geneva.
The Moroccan authorities are determined to compensate to the best the victims of past abuses, the official said, recalling the creation by Morocco in 1999 of an independent arbitration body, made of judges, lawyers and university professors.
"This body, which set the rules and criteria of compensation, is entitled to take decisions on the basis of justice and equity. These decisions are not subject to any appeal," Benzakour added.
