European tourists to Tunisia declined; Inter-Arab tourism up

Official statistics issued yesterday revealed a decline in the number of German tourists who visited Tunisia by 65 % to 350,000 tourists in 2002.
Tourism, however, is the largest source of hard currency income in Tunisia, representing 17% of the total revenues in the country in hard currency. Tourism is the second ranking sector in terms of recruiting the labor force following the sector of agriculture.
The killing of 14 Germans in an attack against a temple in April, 2002 at Jarba resort resulted in the decline of tourists that year, and the number of European tourists declined by 19.4% to 2.9 million tourists.
Europe is the source of most of hard currency tourism revenues in Tunisia.
German tourists are mostly preferred in Tunisia because if their generous spending.
In 2001, one million Germans visited Tunisia, representing 18.5 % of the total number of tourists who tolled 5.4 million and the German tourists provided 28% of the revenues.
Total number of tourists to Tunisia declined by 6.7% to be 5.04 million in 2002 with the increase in the number of Arab tourists coming from Libya, Algeria, Moroccan and Mauritania. A matter which compensated for some of the deficit in the number of European tourists coming to Tunisia.
