Morocco renews commitment to African development initiative
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 2/21/2003

Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Thursday renewed Morocco's commitment to the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

"The Kingdom of Morocco (É) is already deeply involved in this process, and wholeheartedly supports such a promising initiative," King Mohammed VI said in a speech at the Summit of the Heads of State of Africa and France, opened Thursday morning in Paris with 45 African heads of state and of government attending.

"Africa has realised the magnitude of the challenge it must meet and initiated an integrated, comprehensive strategy for its development," said the king, adding "the most compelling illustration of this strategy is the NEPAD which provides an exemplary platform for a fruitful inter-African partnership and for efficient international cooperation."

Finalised in July 2001, NEPAD is a vision and program of action for the redevelopment of the African continent. It is meant to be a comprehensive integrated development plan that addresses key social, economic and political priorities in a coherent and balanced manner.

The initiative targets the promotion of accelerated growth and sustainable development, the eradication of widespread and severe poverty and the stoppage of marginalisation of Africa in the globalisation process.

King Mohammed VI underlined that Morocco is convinced that the proposed reforms, especially those in connection with good governance and the democratisation process, will stimulate the necessary energies and mobilize regional and continental potentialities in order to make the principles and objectives of NEPAD a concrete reality.
