Regional, Politics, 2/21/2003

The General Secretariat of the Arab League has announced that the Ordinary Arab summit will be held in Cairo on March 1st under the chairmanship of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and this decision was taken following "consultations with the Arab states to this effect."

Earlier, the Bahraini news agency stressed that this date was approved to convene the summit following a telephone call between the king of Bahrain, and the Egyptian president.

Earlier, sources at the Arab League announced that the extraordinary summit which was due by the end of this month, February was cancelled.

The spokesman for the Arab League Hesham Youssef said that the Arab foreign ministers will hold a preparatory meeting in Cairo on February 27th in order to prepare for the agenda of the ordinary summit. This agenda is expected to include three main items, especially the Iraqi question, the Palestinian issue and another issue which is still under consultation, according to the spokesman.

The Arab foreign ministers failed to reach an agreement on a special summit during their emergency meeting which they held in Cairo by the beginning of this week. Rather an official source at the AL said that the Arab leaders will not convene an extraordinary summit on Iraq and be limit to convene an ordinary meeting in March.
