World Bank confident in Morocco's potential
Morocco, Politics, 2/20/2003
High ranking World Bank officials voiced their confidence in Morocco's potential and praised the government's determination to devise concrete plans to implement the priorities spelled out by King Mohammed VI, in his speech given before the Parliament last October.
In a press conference held in Rabat on Wednesday, the Director of the Maghreb region section, at the Middle East and North Africa department, Theodore Ahlers, said the program set up by the government to materialize these priorities reflects "a true determination" to overcome obstacles that hinder Morocco's economic take off.
Ahlers voiced the WB's will to accompany "voluntary actions" decided by the government through counselling and technical support.
In his speech before the Parliament, the king spelled out Morocco's priorities namely productive employment, economic development, useful education and decent housing.
Ahlers further noted that some reforms were raised by Morocco's Premier's cabinet to the level of "urgent," mentioning in this regard the reform of education and that of justice, which is full-heartedly supported by the WB.
For Leila Zlaoui, adviser to WB's Vice President, "Morocco is by far the most developed country in North Africa and the Middle East," as evidenced by the level of the civil society that constitutes an important indicator of a given country's openness.
Indeed, she stressed, Morocco's civil society could well serve as an example to be followed for the whole of the region's countries.
Morocco's enormous potentials could be instrumental in ensuring the Kingdom's economic take off provided they be mobilized in an efficient manner, she went on.
