Cancellation of the Arab special summit on Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 2/20/2003

A source at the Arab League in Cairo said yesterday that the special Arab summit called upon by Egypt, due to be held on February 28th was cancelled.

The source stressed that the Arab states have failed in maintaining an agreement on the summit which was called upon by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Earlier, a high ranking source at the Lebanese foreign ministry stressed that the special Arab summit concerning Iraq will not be held this year because of the obligations of Arab presidents and kings to attending other summits.

The source which asked to be anonymous added the summit will not be held in February and the contacts made by a tripartite committee in charge of preparing for this summit has so far resulted in nothing.

The tripartite committee includes Lebanon, in its capacity as the current president of the current session of the Arab summit, Egypt in being the host country and the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa.

The source indicated to the holding of the 22nd French- African summit with the participation of several Arab states from the African continent on Thursday and Friday in Paris, which includes Egypt's president and the king of Morocco.

On the other hand, the non- aligned summit in which several Arab states are participating will be held on February 24 and 25 in Malaysia while the organization of the Islamic conference will hold an emergency meeting on Iraq on March 4 and 5 in Doha.
