Jeihan: Turkish conditions for the war against Iraq
Turkey-USA, Politics, 2/20/2003
The Turkish Jeihan news agency said quoting well-informed sources that the Turkish government has asked the US administration to give a written commitment in which it clarify the nature of the political entity which will be in Iraq in the period after Saddam Hussein, and the role which will be played by the Kurdish and Turkman groups in the said entity.
The sources explained that the commitment includes defining the role and number of the American forces in northern Iraq in details, and for the American administration to give a list on the quality and quantity of weapons and ammunition it gave to certain Kurdish groups in the region, and to prevent the transfer of these weapons to members of the Kurdistani Workers party.
The commitment also includes defining ways of running and operating the excavated oil from Karkouk and al-Mousel areas, together with Turkey's deliberate assertion to prevent the Kurdish groups from imposing their control on the two said areas.
