Mubarak calls Arab leaders to hold extraordinary summit next week
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 2/15/2003

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak Friday evening urged Arab leaders to hold an extraordinary Arab summit to probe the Iraqi crisis in a bid to find a peaceful solution that can avert military action.

At a press conference held Friday evening, Mubarak warned against the adverse effects on the area and the entire world of any military action in the region.

Mubarak warned that the situation in the Middle East is difficult, crucial and complicated, pointing out that he discussed the issue with the Arab leaders during his recent tour which took him to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Libya.

The president stressed the importance of exploring a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis and adopting a unified Arab stance.

He said that US President George W. Bush, during two telephone calls in October and one ten days ago, expressed hope for finding a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis, pointing out that the US President told him that he did not want to enter into war against Iraq.

The president stressed that the importance of unifying stances to influence the decision makers, not the United Nations.

He said that his talks today (Friday) with the King of Bahrain dealt on the Iraqi crisis and means to find a solution, especially the Arab summit which was to be held in March 25.

President Mubarak warned that war would inflict heavy damage and cause negative impacts not only on the region but also on the world countries.

President Mubarak said following his meeting with King of Bahrain yesterday he thought that a solution must be found especially that the regular Arab summit won't meet before one month and if something happens before the summit the gathering will be futile.

He warned that the strike will have adverse effects and repercussion on the entire region.

President Mubarak called for holding an Arab extraordinary session at any time as of February 22 to take unified stance to solve the problem in a sound way.

The foreign ministers' meeting will pave the way for the extraordinary Arab summit which might be held in Sharm El Sheikh.
