Regional-Iraq, Politics, 2/15/2003
Damascus is due to witness a massive demonstration today, Saturday, in protest against US threats to the Iraqi people and in support of the Palestinian Intifada.
The Syrian Arab Public Committee for supporting Intifada and resisting the Zionist project called on different social, political and public organizations to take part in the demonstration which comes as a response to the International Emergency Commission on the occasion of the International Peace Day.
Also, demonstrations were staged yesterday at Al-Azhar Mosque following Friday prayers.
The demonstrators called on the Islamic world countries and governments to prevent the US from a military strike on the Iraqi people and to support Iraq in its crisis.
They also called for facing the Israeli continued atrocities against the Palestinian people.
The demonstrators chanted slogans calling for a unified Arab and Islamic stance towards the current situation and expressed support of the French and German stances rejecting war against Iraq.
On the other hand, the Egyptian Society for International Law condemned the possible military strike on Iraq and said that only United Nations should deal with the Iraqi mass destruction weapons issue through a balanced plan to clear the region of such weapons.
The society, in its statement issued by the board under Minister of Higher Education and State Minister for Scientific Research Mofid Shehab, called for adopting wisdom and law to prevent outbreak of war.
Meanwhile, similar demonstrations will be staged, on February 15th, in more than 1800 cities and 141s capital all over the world in support of the Palestinian Intifada and struggle against the Israeli aggressions as well as in denunciation of the US military campaign against Iraq that threatens the region and the world security and stability.
