Egypt calls for an urgent Arab summit on Iraq
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 2/15/2003

The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher has asked the secretary general of the Arab League AL to call for convening an urgent Arab summit at the headquarters of the AL in Cairo as soon as possible in order to discuss the implications of the Iraqi crisis.

News reports said that the call for this summit will be the main item on the agenda of the Arab foreign ministers during their meeting in Cairo on Saturday and Sunday.

The news reports added that Maher held several telephone calls in recent hours with the foreign ministers of Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria and other Arab states in order to inform them about the Egyptian request.

However, news have been recently contradictory concerning the date to convene the next Arab summit in Cairo. While, MENA quoted just ten days ago confirmation made by the AL secretary general that it will be held by the beginning of March, Mousa himself said that the final date for the summit will be set in the emergency meeting of the Arab ministers on February 16.

But an official source at the AL said that the expected date of the ordinary summit will be in the mid of March, rather its beginning, as announced earlier following the approval of the Arab League to convene it in Cairo instead of Manama.

The AL source explained that Bahrain had asked to transfer the summit to Cairo because of what it described military threats in the Gulf. Worthy mentioning that the recent Arab summit was held in March, 2002 in Beirut.
