On the parliamentary elections in Syria
Syria, Politics, 2/14/2003
The Syrian minister of the interior Ali Hamoud has announced that his ministry "has completed all necessary measures for the election operation due in March," while more than 10,000 candidates for the Parliamentary elections are preparing to debate their programs before the voters.
According to SANA, some 10,817,821 Syrians are eligible to vote and will choose their representatives among 10,403 of the candidates in order to fill the 250 seats at the Parliament in 11,400 voting centers distributed on all the Syrian governorates, cities, owns and villages.
However, observers expect the number of businessmen is expected to be large at the parliament, especially the independents among them, due to the intensive advertising presence they have in the street.
The idea of increasing number of independents in the Syrian parliament started in the 7th legislative session under the rule of the late President Hafez al-Assad when the Baath party leadership decided to leave one third of the seats for elections. A matter which permitted the entry of large number of business men to the parliament at that time.
