Khartoum releases 6 of al-Turabi partisans
Sudan, Politics, 2/13/2003
The Sudanese authorities have released several detainees including members in the opposition People's National Congress party led by Sheikh Hassan al-Turabi.
This measure was taken on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, according to Um Durman radio yesterday. However, the radio did not clarify when those persons were arrested nor their number, but merely confined to mentioning names of six members of the People's Congress.
It explained that the release operation was approved following presidential instructions to that effect. The radio also said that the release covered the party's deputy chairman Ibrahim al-Sanousi and other five members of less importance in the said party.
