Bahraini activists head for Iraq in a solidarity trip
Bahrain-Iraq, Politics, 2/13/2003
A Bahraini activist has announced that 100 Bahraini activists will head for Iraq on the dock of a ship on February 17 in a one- week solidarity trip to Iraq.
The chairman of the Bahraini people's committee in support of the Iraqi people Hassan al-Alli said that the " committee called for the organization of the solidarity trip with Iraq," noting that "80 activists representing political and vocational societies in Bahrain and common citizens have so far registered their names to carry out this trip." He added " we do hope that the number will reach 100 persons within days.. Arrangements still continuous, but we will carefully consider the meeting of the UN security council ( on Friday) to see if the situation will imply greater escalation.." He added " Should there be new indicators for escalation, we will cancel the trip.. We do not want to be a risk for the Iraqis."
Al-Alli said that the citizen group which will leave for Iraq will arrive in al-Basra first and then will head by cars to Baghdad and the visit is scheduled to last for one week during which the delegation will hold solidarity activities with Iraq like sit-in in front of the headquarters of the UN in Baghdad and visiting hospitals and al-Amereyah shelter." He added that the committee has called for a sit-in in front of the headquarters of the UN tomorrow in coincidence with the demonstrations to be held in 42 countries in protest of the war US threatens to launch against Iraq.
However, the Bahraini people's committee in support of the Iraqi people, which was established in September 2002 has organized three demonstrations, at least, in Manama in protest of the war the US threats against Iraq, the last of which was in January this year, attended by 3,000 persons.
Bahrain, one of the most important allies in the region, where the leadership of the American 6th fleet has a headquarters, has witnessed during the two past years citizens acts of protests against the US.
The protests reached its peak in April 2002, when the American embassy in Manama was exposed to an attack by explosives in a demonstration attended by thousands of angry Bahrainis in the peak of the Israeli invasion of the Palestinian territories.
