Mrs Mubarak launches One Million Book Initiative
Regional-Egypt, Culture, 2/8/2003
Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak yesterday gave the go-ahead to the One Million Book Initiative, which targets Arab children and the youth.
The Mrs Mubarak initiative calls for printing and selling one million copies of a very important and interesting Arabic book for children, simultaneously on the same day in all Arab capitals.
The unprecedented initiative, launched by Mrs Mubarak, marks the beginning of Arab Book Day, which will be celebrated by all of the region's countries.
The One Million Book Initiative is the first gift by the Arab Council for Children's Books to all children of the Arab world, Mrs Mubarak announced during a Cairo meeting.
An ad hoc higher committee, which comprises top level Arab writers, is to be formed to select a book of which one million issues are to be printed, she told a council meeting, held under her chairmanship.
The Council, she continued, will identify a book whose theme is of great interest to an Arab child, or which highlights a great Arab value like honesty, patriotism or telling the truth.
The Council will print one million copies of the selected book, which will be sold at a very nominal price to all Arab children on the same day.
Arab children will be reading the same book on the same day, Mrs Mubarak said at the meeting, adding that her initiative will be a very strong start to the Council's activities.
The One Million Book Initiative will prove beyond doubt that the Council has the ability to make contact with and unite all Arab children, she said.
The Council has a host of challenging tasks ahead, which aim to effect radical changes in children's education, as well as encouraging them to seek knowledge and information through reading, Mrs Mubarak added.
