Pope calls for inter-Christian Unity tolerance among heavenly religions

Head of the Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Shenouda III has appealed for tolerance, harmony and dialogue within the Christian Church and among the heavenly religions and sects.

The heart of the various faiths is peace, tolerance and the good of humankind, he said at his weekly Wednesday night sermon that was this time dedicated to "the week of prayer for Christian religious unity and tolerance and dialogue among the heavenly religions."

Among the audience were representatives of the various Christian denominations.

In the past few years, the Orthodox Church has started to give due attention to the issue of dialogue and cooperation among the different Christian sects following a long period of isolation, he said.

This openness and acceptance of other was paralleled by cooperation with and tolerance towards the followers of the other heavenly religions, he added.

The gathering was attended by Bishop Mourner Hanna Airs, Head of Egypt and North Africa's Episcopal Church.

He delivered an address on the importance of achieving unity of the Christian churches.
