Greece looks to UN inspectors' to solve the Iraqi crisis
Iraq-Greece, Politics, 2/8/2003
Greek Foreign Minister, Georges Papandreou, whose country is acting chairman of the European Union (EU), said in Cairo on Friday he relies on the mission of United Nations (UN) inspectors in Iraq to solve the Iraqi crisis.
"Iraq should provide accurate answers to questions contained in the report of Hans Blix, head of UN Inspectors Committee, and to those by US Secretary of state, Colin Powell," Papandreou told the press in Cairo.
"A diplomatic solution to the crisis is possible if Iraq provides answers."
The Greek diplomat, who is visiting Egypt, met with Egyptian counterpart, Ahmad Maher, and Arab League Secretary General, Amr Moussa, over means to resolve the issue through peaceful means.
A joint delegation of EU and Arab officials will be dispatched to Baghdad, said Greek diplomatic sources.
Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmad Maher, said his country is hopeful that the Security Council will consolidate inspections. This will permit a peaceful solution, he said, adding "we don't plan to send an Egyptian envoy to Iraq." For Arab League chief War in Iraq "is not inevitable."
