Al-Sharq al-Awsat: Sudanese negotiators search for a new mechanism to monitor truce
Sudan, Politics, 2/3/2003

Sudanese peace negotiations started between the Sudanese government and the rebels chaired by John Garang in peaceful atmosphere for the first time since several days following accusation of violating a fragile truce.

The official spokesman for the rebels Yasser Araman said in a telephone call with the London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat from Kern that negotiators between the two sides are currently embarking on studying a new mechanism to monitor halting hostilities so as to allow negotiators to work calmly without having "operations" taking place. "It is obvious that if this new mechanism is signed it will be an important step towards preparing the atmospheres of the negotiations without being interrupted by a military act."

He added that "the negotiations will continue to discuss the issues of authority and the wealth (sharing) and we do find that the correct and just solution for the process of the authority and wealth will give a new hope for Sudan's unity."

In Khartoum, the advisor for the President for peace affairs Ghazi Salah Eddine said that the government and the rebels have eliminated the recent crisis erupted because of the exchanged accusations of violating the truce. He said that the two delegations discussed pending issues. He described the meeting between the two sides as positive.
