Syria is giving tourism sector attention for growth
Syria, Economics, 2/1/2003

Syria's Assistant Minister of Tourism, Muhannad Kalash has affirmed that the tourism sector in Syria is being given needed attention to make it flourish in recent years.

In a statement he made in Madrid to Spanish mass media on the sideline of the Spanish tourism fair of Vitor, being held in Madrid nowadays, which Syria is taking part, Kalash outlined tourism ministry's policy and activities for promoting Syria's tourism, notably exempting tourism projects from taxes for the first seven years from establishment date, 50 percent of the total cost custom-free for any tourism project, allowing interests in hard currency transaction abroad, flexibility in dealing with tourists by facilitating their entry to Syria, and exempting tourist groups from Syrian entry visa fees as well as the establishment of Chambers of Tourism and tourism promotion fund.

The assistant tourism minister indicated that Syria had witnessed more than 30 civilizations and contains more than 3000 tourist sites including Christian and Muslim sites as well as unique villages as that of Ma'aloula whose inhabitants still speak the language of Jesus Christ ( the Aramaic).

Kalash pointed out that Syria's tourism offers does not limit itself to the cultural and religious tourism but rather to different kinds of tourism including coastal, mountainous and desert tourism and resort areas.

He concluded by calling on the Spanish tourists to "become familiar with Syria and explore all her civilazational aspects and people who are renowned for being friendly and hospitable."
