Al-Shara on Syria's policy, at the Arab writers conference
Syria-Regional, Politics, 1/31/2003
Syria's Foreign Minister, Farouk Al-Shara yesterday in Damascus reiterated Syria's solid and principled stances, under the leadership of President Bashar Al-Assad, regarding the regional and international issues and developments, as well as her definite rejection of any aggression against Iraq's people and land and Syria's efforts, together with the international community, in finding a peaceful solution which distances the ghost of war from the region on the bases of related international resolutions.
In a word before the annual conference of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus, al-Shara made it clear that "a war against Iraq would have dangerous conclusions and results on the region and its people underlining that the whole world, including the majority of Americans, reject the idea of war since they know that any war against Iraq would be under baseless pretexts which would not serve but only Israel."
Preventing a war on Iraq, for the region's countries, particularly Iraq's neighboring states, constitutes a vital issue since such a war targets Iraq's unity and oil, according to many strategic studies, as well as aims at creating great intellectual, cultural and economic changes in the whole region, al-Shara added.
The foreign minister stressed the importance of the Iraq's six-neighboring states recent Istanbul meeting where the six countries unanimously stressed on the necessity of finding a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue and achievement of a peace which guarantees stability and prosperity for the whole people of the region and the world.
Minister al-Shara pointed out that the Arab culture has been exposed to continuous invasions during last centuries but it remains solid and nothing could change the nation's will.
Al-Shara recalled the Arab people's steadfastness in the face of colonial plots and that threats and challenges would not frighten the Arab nation, but rather they would be defeated in the same way Israel failed to oppress the will of the Palestinian people and the Intifada. He also recalled Lebanese national resistance's will which defeated the Israeli occupation forces from south Lebanon in May 2000.
The US pretext to strike Iraq is more applicable to Israel which strategic studies affirm its possession of a large nuclear weapons arsenal and other devastating weapons known to the world, al-Shara stated. The foreign minister pointed out that Israel is exploiting international concern over Iraq, and makes itself to be a victim when it fact it plays the role of the executor against the unarmed Palestinian people.
"Israel is a racist state and wants the region's treasures and to rewrites region's history in its way," al-Shara indicated underlining that the Israeli force would be limited before the Palestinian people and the Arab nation's steadfastness.
