King Mohammed to grant humanitarian royal pardon to inmates

Morocco's King Mohammed VI said in Agadir Wednesday he will grant his pardon to a special category of prisoners for humanitarian reasons.

The sovereign who opened this Wednesday the judiciary year said he asked the justice minister to draw a list of prisoners suffering from incurable diseases, the disabled, pregnant and breastfeeding women and children with particular education and artistic skills (and needs).

"In a bid to alleviate the sufferings of some categories of prisoners who enjoy Our sympathy for humanitarian reasons, We have given Our High Directives to Our Minister of Justice to submit to Our High appreciation proposals to extend the Royal pardon to prisoners affected by incurable diseases, invalid or handicapped prisoners, pregnant or breast-feeding prisoners, or children who have particular education or artistic (needs)," the sovereign pointed out.

The king insisted that the selection criteria should be very rigorous. "We will announce at the appropriate time the decision that we have made," he went on.

After recalling the recent "painful events that occurred in some prisons," the sovereign said in parallel to the ambitious program to reform penitentiary legislation re-integrate inmates, he has instructed the government to build modern, civil and rural prison compounds and to see to the improvement of prisoners' material and moral conditions.
